Sri Lanka Teaching

Have you the stamina of an elephant, the wisdom of the Buddha?

Or maybe you have just left university or are still studying?

Why not enhance your C V and job prospects by spending a spell of time teaching on a working holiday in Sri Lanka?

We offer 1 , 2 and 3 month voluntary work placements assisting the teaching of English in schools in rural Sri Lanka. Airport pick-up, accommodation and meals are included in the scheme at very reasonable rates from as little as GBP 230 per month.  (Click on ‘What you see is what you get’ link at the bottom of this page for details.  Also includes a  new 6-week option! )

A teaching qualification would be very useful but is not essential . Most rural Sri Lankan children and adolescents are not very familiar with English and your help will be welcomed.

Some of you will work in small schools in the Central Highlands, teaching children whose parents are often tea-estate or other manual workers. The medium of instruction is either Sinhala or Tamil, varying from school to school, so you will be giving English lessons. Pupils are typically boys and girls aged from 5-16. Others may work in larger establishments, some of them international schools, where English is the chief medium of instruction. As well as English, you will be teaching other subjects in these schools; children may take the London GCSE examinations in various subjects. Just let us know which subjects you can offer in addition to English.  The placements are approved by the Zonal Director of Eduction and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

Accommodation is in single/double rooms with attached bathroom at Suryanamaska. Meals will consist of traditional rice and curries. Where applicable transport can be arranged to your school. All schools are within easy reach of Suryanamaska; Kandy, the hill capital, and Gampola, another large town, are each 20 km away. There is a regular bus service to both places.

“It was quite a shock to be treated all the time as someone very special.  People  would constantly stop and stare at me, amazed to see a white person.  This took a little while to acclimatize – I was the only white person in the area and the only white person they had ever seen. The school children themselves were charming and eager to learn, pleased that their school had been given the status symbol of a foreign teacher.  Most resources go to towns so I was especially pleased to be helping rural schoolchildren learn English.  I hope that more volunteers will continue to join the project as there are always more schools needing our services.”

“I was thrilled to have my own private transport to and from school . My trishaw collected me from Suryanamaska at 7.45 am.    I often gave lifts to children who had to walk a long way home through tea estates after school finished at 2 pm.  As for lunch, this was at 3 pm, which took some getting used to.  At school we had a mid-morning break around 11.30, when all the teachers shared out the food they had brought.  I sampled delicacies such as thosai, idli , roti , which are all types of pancakes, and then had to make room for a full lunch of rice and several curries. “

“It has been very satisfying watching the children’s spoken and written English improve.  I have also been helping with music and drama.  The older children put on a play which was in English and it was wonderful to see what hidden talents children from such poor backgrounds had.  They were also great at singing and dancing, which was so cool.  I have really enjoyed helping underprivileged children develop their knowledge and skills.”

“There was never a dull moment in Sri Lanka.  Teaching kept me so busy and I spent the weekends visiting  different areas of the Island. The surfing on the east coast was wicked. Some excursions were organised, like visiting jungle temples and  riding in the hills, and usually included a meal at a Sri Lankan house.  I gained a real insight into local culture and customs,   something I would never have been able to do otherwise.”

If you wish, we will be happy to help you organise various trips during your free time.

You will need to provide your own spending money but bear in mind that the cost of living is low by western standards.
